ASTM A36 CS Steel is the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) designation for carbon steel. ASTM A36 CS ASTM A36 has a yield strength of 36,000 psi and an allowable bending stress of 22,000 psi. The properties of ASTM A36 steel allow it to deform steadily as stress is increased beyond its yield strength. This ductility allows buildings to stand long after the limits of a structure have been met in an emergency, allowing the inhabitants to exit safely before collapse.
ASTM A36 CS carbon steel plate and pipe is the most common type of steel alloy.
ASTM A36 CS Carbon Steel Chemical Requirements(Heat Treatment):
• Carbon up to .29 maximum depending on thickness
• Manganese range of .80 to 1.20 depending on thickness
• Phosphorous is .04 maximum
• Sulfur is .05 maximum
• Silicon range of .15 to .40 maximum depending on thickness
ASTM A36 CS Carbon Steel Mechanical Requirements:
• Yield Strength is 36 ksi (36,000psi) minimum
• Tensile Strength can range from 58 to 80 ksi (58,000psi to 80,000psi)
• Elongation in 2”(50mm) test is 23% minimum
• Elongation in 8”(200mm) test is 20% minimum
