ASTM A242 specification covers high-strength low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates, and bars for welded, riveted, or bolted construction. ASTM A242 low alloy steel plate is intended primarily for use as structural members where savings in weight (mass) or added durability are important. Steel specimens shall be semi-killed or killed.

Weathering Steel is often referred to as Cor-Ten or A606-4 / A588. ASTM A242 weathering steel coil is a group of steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting steel and to insure that the steel will form a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the elements for a prolonged period of time. The net effect is that the steel creates a beautiful patina coating which also guards against future corrosion.
The corrosion-retarding effect of the patina is produced by a concentration of alloying elements in the steel. Amazingly, these alloys regenerate continuously when subjected to the influence of the weather.
