High strength low alloy steel is generally intended for applications where savings in weight can be affected by reason of its greater strength. HSLA plats will vary in atmospheric corrosion resistance from equal to that of conventional carbon steels to approximately four times that of conventional carbon steels.

ASTM A572-50 HSLA plate has a higher yield and tensile strength than A36 plate, combined with a lower weight.
ASTM A588 steel plate is a high strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steel. ASTM A588 HSLA plate exhibits high atmospheric corrosion resistance resulting from a coating that develops on the metal after exposure to external conditions. With strength and strength-to-weight properties comparable to A572 steel, it is an ideal material for products that are exposed to weather.
ASTM A606 plate, a High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steel plate, is 20-30% lighter than carbon steel and ASTM A606 HSLA plate exhibits up to four times the atmospheric corrosion resistance of common structural carbon steel.
A516-70 HSLA plate is a high strength metal, is easy to fabricate and can be securely welded. A516-70 plate also has good corrosion resistance.
