AISI/SAE 4140 high strength steel plate and tube is a chromium and molybdenum alloy steel that has an excellent weight to strength ratio. It is considerably stronger than standard steel. Alloy 4140 plate and tube has a tensile strength of 150,000 psi, yield strength of 130,000psi and approximately 35-45% elongation. Alloy 4140 is typically used for bolts couplings, axle shafts, piston rods, tractor arms, clutch and flywheel components, sprockets, etc.

41xx steel is a family of SAE steel grades, as specified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Alloying elements include chromium and molybdenum, and as a result these materials are often informally referred to as chromoly steel (common variant stylings include chrome-moly, cro-moly, CrMo, CRMO, CR-MOLY, and similar). 
AISI or SAE 4140 grade is a low-alloy steel containing chromium and molybdenum as strengthening agents. Its chemical composition is seen to the right:
AISI/SAE 4140 high strength steel plate and tube is a versatile alloy with good atmospheric corrosion resistance and reasonable strength up to around 600o F (315o C.) It shows good overall combinations of strength, toughness, wear resistance and fatigue strength.
Although AISI/SAE 4140 high strength steel is chromium steel and often referred to as "chromoly steel", it does not contain as much chromium as stainless steel. Therefore the corrosion resistant is improved compared to standard steel but not to the same degree as stainless steels. The purpose of the molybdenum is to add uniformity of hardness and strength to this alloy. 4140 alloy responds readily to heat treatment and is relatively easy to machine in the heat treated condition.

1045 Forged and Hot Rolled Steel Bars Process

1045 Forged and Hot Rolled Steel Bar is used where greater strength is required than can be obtained from the lower carbon steels. It responds to heat treatment, and a wide range of properties can be obtained. Applications include shafts, machinery parts, bolts, pinions, gears, etc.

1045 Forged and Hot Rolled Steel Bars Process:

Step1: Our process begins with either hot-rolled steel coils or hot-rolled straight bars from the mill. When hot-rolled bars are used, they are drawn individually. When coils are used, overhead cranes use C-hooks to safely lift the coil onto the “Payoff-Decoiler.”
Step2: Steel unwraps from the “Payoff De-Coiler” and is fed through the horizontal and vertical pre-straightener rollers to “break the memory” of the coil.
Step3: Steel continues on through the shot blaster so that the surface of the bar can be cleaned of all scale and rust.
Step4: Now the steel is push-pointed through a die. The drawing unit will then pull the steel through that same die, in a continuous motion.
Step5: Continuous straightening is maintained by passing the steel through more rollers.
Step6: Non-destructive testing is in place on all drive lines to ensure that surface defects from the raw materials are being detected and sorted out.
Step7: More straightening processes are in place throughout the draw line.
Step8: Shear barrels or shear knives will shear or cut the bar to the customer’s desired length.
Step9: The final straightening process occurs at the 2-roll straightener when the bar passes through the large concave and convex rolls. Guide blades, angles and pressure all contribute to the final straightness of the bar.
